Join us Saturday, August 17, 2022 from 3:00PM – 10:00PM at History Park as we host the Spirit of ’45 Living History Day and Big Band Swing Dance. What is normally a two-day event, will be merged into one – a living history day and reenactment in the afternoon and big band, swing dance in the evening.
Spirit of ‘45 is observed on the second weekend in August, coinciding with President Truman’s announcement that World War II was over. The event captures the war and home front experience with exhibits and interactive activities for all ages including live big band music, swing dancing, a WWII tent city, vintage cars, a fashion show, 1940s era children’s games, trolley rides, and over a dozen Victorian-era homes and buildings that are open to the public.
The day climaxes with President Truman’s announcement, a reenactment of the famous Times Square kiss, and a homecoming victory parade. The event lasts into the evening with a USO-style swing dance that jumps and jives under the lights of History Park. This program has been developed in conjunction with the Keep Spirit of ‘45 Alive Bay Area chapter.
